First Sunday in Lent

 Sentence

Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.

 Luke 4.8

Collect First Sunday in Lent

O saving God,

who led your people through the wilderness

and brought them to the promised land:

so guide us that, following our Saviour,

we may walk through the wilderness of this world

and be brought to the glory of the world which is to come;

through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer from our Archbishop for Flood Victim

All things look to you, O Lord,

to give them their food in due season:

look in mercy on your people,

and hear our prayer for those whose lives and possessions

have been destroyed by flood.

In your mercy restore your creation and heal our land.

So guide and bless your people,

that we may enjoy the fruits of the earth

and give you thanks with grateful hearts,

through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Readings: Deuteronomy 26.1-11;   Ps 91.1-2,9-16;   Romans 10.4-13;       Luke 4.1-15

Fr Peter writes:

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness after his baptism and there he was tempted to take shortcuts in his ministry.

After fasting for some time he was tempted to use his special gifts to convert stone into bread and eat. Jesus quoted the scripture ‘One does not live by bread alone.’ Focus on the fast and listening to the Father’s will and not to human weakness.

Jesus is then shown all the kingdoms of world under the control of Satan and the devil offers to trade them if Jesus would worship him. Jesus responds with scripture again, ‘Worship the Lord you God, and serve only Him.’

The devil then tries to twist scripture by taking Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple and says ’If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you”,
and “On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.” ’  But Jesus responds “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ It is not a battle of proof tests but to obey God and God’s plan.

That is good for Jesus and good for us too. No short cuts but faithfully follow God’s plan.

Yours in the household of God, Peter+

Fr Peter will be in the parish Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday this week

Labyrinth Message

This week's labyrinth message for you to "walk with" is : As we prepared for Ash Wednesday and strive towards experiencing your own Holy Lent … how appropriate that we reflect upon our own temptations …perhaps we sometimes obsess too much about securing our own comforts; building up our own egos, sense of control over our own lives, seek power over others and to also be honoured by them?

In this week's Gospel, we are reminded of the triumph of Jesus in the midst of His temptation in the wilderness. I wonder if / what Discipline you may choose this Lent? .. and also what temptations will emerge for you this week? Jesus reminds us that He is with us through our temptations and we will not be tempted beyond our strength … but should we fall, His forgiveness awaits as we once more strive to get "back on track" and follow Him.

Bequests and Giving

Please think about what could be achieved to the glory of god, through your bequest or gift in your will to the Anglican Parish of Tamborine Mountain. You are welcome to discuss this with the priest.

Prayers of the people   Prepared by Peta

Paul tells us: “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek;  the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.” Loving Father, we bring our prayers before you today.

We pray for our earth, and the water, plants and animals which sustain us. We pray you will guide us in using them sustainably for our own sakes.

The same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.

We pray for those suffering the consequences of climate change as destructive weather events destroy communities and peoples’ lives. We pray for those in Queensland and NSW suffering from flooding and water inundation. We pray also for Pacific Islands being swallowed up by the sea. We give thanks for the selflessness of emergency workers, and we pray for their ongoing safety.

The same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.

We pray for your church around the world and all those who call you Lord. We pray for Archbishop Philip, Bishop John, our Ministers Peter, John and Allan, our appointed Minister, Tom, and all who come together here to carry out your will. We pray for our Monarch, head of the Worldwide Anglican Communion.

The same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.

We pray for all those in our community and in the wider world who are suffering hunger, poverty or homelessness. We pray especially for the people of Afghanistan and the people of Ukraine, as they are displaced and their lives and hopes destroyed. Open our hearts to be kinder and more generous to those without and in dire need.

We give thanks for vaccines to keep us safe from serious illness, and for the reduction in Covid spread and re-opening of borders. We pray for the sick and dying, and for the bereaved, that they may feel your love.

The same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.

We give thanks for the faithful departed, for those who lived their lives in your love. We know you have prepared a place for each of us, even the most humble, that love you. Give us your grace to go forward into a new week of challenges confident in your love.

The same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. Loving Father, grant that what we have asked for in faith, we will, by your grace, receive. Amen.

Prayer points from Tom: We uphold Tom and his family -  wife, Amy, and four children: Matthew, Sophie and Adam, and Bee. We give thanks that the three eldest children will be able to enrol at the local schools when they arrive,

We pray for a good ending to jobs and life in the UK and for visas!
