Fr Peter writes:

On 6th January Christians celebrate the visit of some wise men from the East to the infant Jesus. The only Biblical reference to this event is Matthew chapter 2. We call it Epiphany. We are celebrating this today.

God revealed Jesus’ birth to these men in a foreign country. They were not Jews so the revelation was outside the Jewish community. It was through their study of the stars. We could say, through their science. They were motivated to visit and worship the child.

If we read the whole of the chapter, we see the consequences of this visit. Herod kills all the male children in Bethlehem and the surrounding district who were 2 years old or younger and Jesus and his family fled into Egypt as refugees, remaining there until Herod died.

God communicates with us in any number of ways. If we get the message we can choose to respond to it or neglect it. If we respond, there may be unforeseen consequences and it may affect others too.

There is evil in the world because people make evil choices.

Mary and Joseph protected Jesus from Herod by fleeing to Egypt.

Let us remember that Jesus and his family were refugees

Refugees need protection and a safe haven but for some reason this is often not given to millions of refugees in the world today. It is not given in our country either even when they have been declared refugees by the UN. We detain them for years on end at great expense. What do you think a Christian response would be?

Yours in the household of God.  Peter+

Labyrinth Message

This week's labyrinth message for you to "walk with" is : In this New Year, what will you do with your Epiphany( ies) ? [ Literally " moment (s)of sudden Divine revelation" ]

The Epiphany Gospel contains 2 different reactions. The Wise Men received the revelation of the incarnation …then these unlikely Gentiles from afar followed and accepted that invitation .. whilst King Herod upon hearing the "good news" cowed in fear of loss of power and judgement .. then reacted with the massacre of the innocents to remove a potential rival. May we all recognise our Epiphanies as they unfold in 2022 and, like the wise ones,  say "yes" and follow them.. even if sometimes we are challenged by them and don't know where they may lead. I wonder what the story would have been if Herod had reacted out of Love and not Fear ? [Acknowledgement to Fr Richard James for this insight sourced form his recent Epiphany sermon at St Matthew's Anglican Holland Park]

Prayers of the people   Prepared by Anne

Today the wise men knelt before our Saviour.  Let us also kneel to worship him with great joy, and to make our prayers to his heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father, the wise men came from the east to worship your Son: grant to Christians everywhere a true spirit of adoration.

Lord of glory…..hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, your Son is the King of kings and Lord of lords; grant an abundance of peace to your world.

Lord of glory …….hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, we entrust to you the families and communities affected by Omicron wherever they may be.  We pray especially for health care workers, that you may guide and protect them, and in the midst of this, keep us strong in faith, hope and love.  Grant us the courage and perseverance to be good neighbours.

Lord of glory…….hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, your Son was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor; show your love for the poor and powerless, and strengthen those who suffer or who are sick, especially we pray for……..............help them to know your presence.

Lord of glory ……hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, the wise men presented to your Son gold, incense and myrrh; accept the gifts we bring, and the offering of our hearts at the beginning of this new year.

Lord of glory…….hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, you are the King of heaven, the hope of all who trust in you; give to the faithful departed the wonders of your salvation. Let us try to have courage and trust the example of the wise men to follow our guiding lights.

Lord of glory……hear our prayer.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord,  Amen.

Meditation - a weekly thought

Choose a peaceful spot, and a word or mantra, light a candle, lay a leaf

or flower. Sit down, back straight, head up if possible, eyes softly closed, hands rest apart in your lap. Breathe in...Ma-ra...breathing out...na-tha (Maranatha means ‘come Lord’)

School Chaplaincy Mount Tamborine and Canungra

On behalf of chaplaincy, thank you for your ongoing support.

I request your prayers for school chaplaincy on the Mountain and at Canungra. The current situation is that two of the four schools have decided to no longer use the government grant funds to support chaplaincy and new chaplains are needed for the two other schools, St Bernard's and Canungra. We do pray that it may be possible to provide some chaplaincy input to the other two schools.

Also because of Covid the chaplaincy committee has been very much depleted.

If you would like to meet fortnightly for a couple of hours of prayer for a while, then monthly, in an ongoing way please see me. I will also be asking for this support from other churches.                   Rev John LCC(Local Chaplaincy Committee) Chair
