Sentence for the Day

‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven,’ says the Lord. ‘Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’

John 6:51

Collect

Gracious God, you have placed within the hearts of all your children a longing for your word and a hunger for your truth: grant that, believing in the one whom you have sent,

we may know him to be the true bread of heaven and the food of eternal life, Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be glory and honour for ever and ever. Amen.

Stewardship Poem

If I see a gift as mine alone,

I might give hesitantly,

even grudgingly,

after considering my options,

giving primarily from a

sense of ought.

If I see the gift as God’s

who allows me to use it for

a time, then the gift can

flow more freely, as I join

with others to be a channel

for God’s love and mercy.

Commitment Sunday Intercessions Prepared by Keith Slater

Gracious God, as we seek to live in the way of Christ, empower us to be living examples of your love with all whom we meet.

Generous God: we offer ourselves afresh to you.

Giving God, we give you thanks for your Church throughout the world; for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; for Jeremy, our Archbishop; John our Bishop and Helen our priest, and for all who bear witness to the Good News of Jesus.

Generous God: we offer ourselves afresh to you.

Creator God, we give you thanks for your creation and for the provision of our needs. We pray for our careful and equitable sharing of this creation; for the living of just lives; for the recognition of the integrity of each other; and for our living together in peace and harmony.

Generous God: we offer ourselves afresh to you.

Loving God, we offer our thanks for the communities in which we live and share your love.

Generous God: we offer ourselves afresh to you.

Gracious God, today, mindful of your boundless love we make our financial offering to you and your ministry in this Parish and community:

(There will be an extended pause. We are invited to come forward and place our Commitment Card in the offering basket before the altar.)

Gracious God, in this commitment we make the offering of ourselves to you.

Generous God: we offer ourselves afresh to you.

Compassionate God, we hold before you today all those who are in need, those whom we know and whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts.

Generous God: we offer ourselves afresh to you.

Eternal God, we give thanks for all who have gone before us and who have washed the feet of others offering themselves to you in response to your love.

Loving generous God: we offer ourselves afresh to you this day, through Jesus Christ our Lord, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A note from Helen

Our readings today span the polarities and ambiguities of life. They connect themes involving the individual and communal, scarcity and abundance, and fallibility and grace. They are both spiritual and political and call us to move beyond our own self-interest to see world loyalty, beyond scarcity to see abundance. They call us to look beyond our pleasure and power to embrace the power of love and sacrifice. When we are connected with God, we find we have everything we need to succeed, prosper, serve God, and to support God’s vision of Shalom.

David is close to God’s heart. Tempted and seduced by beauty, he takes advantage of Bathsheba, tries to cover it up, and engineers her husband Uriah’s death. There is no excuse for his behaviour, yet saints can also be sinners. David’s immorality challenges us to take inventory of our own lives. Have we not sinned and fallen short of God’s glory? Do we, sometimes, intend good but leave behind us a trail of pain? Our imperfections do not disqualify us from challenging injustice and political immorality, and they remind us not to put ourselves on a moral pedestal.

The feeding of the multitude reminds us that we have resources beyond belief. Five loaves and two fish can feed a multitude. Divine multiplication brings abundance from what we see as just scarcity. What would happen if we anticipated God’s blessings? Our gifts and bounty, dedicated to God’s vision, bring results beyond our expectation.
