Collect

Everliving God,

by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church

is governed and sanctified:

hear the prayers we offer for all your faithful people,

that in the ministry to which you have called them

each may serve you in holiness and truth;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Intercessions  - prepared by Jan Armstrong

Loving God, you created a world of wonder and beauty for us to love and care for. Guide us to see and feel your presence with us anew whenever we consider your marvellous creation. Help us to be faithful stewards conserving the Earth’s natural resources. As we live our lives, may we be respectful of our responsibilities to love and serve you, Father God and provide for generations to come.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

Loving God, may we in St George’s and St Luke’s be a loving, caring Christian community bringing delight to your heart as we show your love and understanding to one another and to the wider community around us. Guide and strengthen us. Centre our hearts on your teachings to lead us forward in your will. May the Holy Spirit be alive in our hearts and minds each day.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

Loving God, you know the heart and needs of each person in our wider community. Help us to be still and hear your voice guiding us to show your love to all. We thank you Father God that in caring for those in need we may be a witness for your love. We especially pray today for refugees, whether they are local people seeking a refuge from domestic violence of every kind or refugees from other countries seeking a safe place to live.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

Loving God, you call to yourself those faithful servants whose earthly work is complete. We pray for your comfort to be with the families of those whose yearly remembrance occurs at this time. We thank you for the sure and certain knowledge that in your time we will join with those who have gone before us to praise and worship you for all eternity.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

You are our God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Grant that what we have asked for in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

A note from Helen

Solomon prays to an all-embracing God whose glory includes both stranger and friend. He prays that this God who was well known to his father David, is so big, so ‘unmeasurable’ that the temple Solomon has built could not ‘hold’ God. God cares for us and for neighbours, and invites us to move outside our own ‘backyards’ and include the rest of humanity as well. God hears the prayers of the foreigner, the ‘known’ and the ‘unknown’ and God will care for the outsider just as much as us. In this current environment of religious tension, we need to hear and respond to these words of inclusion. The foreigner, the refugee, the asylum seeker, those who arrive by legitimate and illegal means, are cared for and cared about by God. Even though we may try to separate ‘church’ from ‘state’, Solomon’s prayer recognises only one kingdom, God’s kingdom flows through our political, and our individual spheres and our behaviour should reflect that kingdom.
