Sentence for the Day

The redeemed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads. Isaiah 51:1

Collect
O God,

you give light to the blind and comfort to the sorrowing,

and in your Son you have given us a High Priest who has offered the true sacrifice for us

and yet can sympathise

with us in our weakness:

hear the cry of your people

and lead us home to our true country, where with

your Son and the Holy Spirit

you live and reign, one God,

in glory everlasting. Amen

Ministry Collect

Quicken, O Lord,

we pray you,

all members of your church,

that we may be alive to the opportunities and

responsibilities of our times.

Save us from complacency and from fear of new ways;

inspire our minds with the hope of your kingdom; give us joy in what lies before us; and stir our wills to pray and to work until your will is done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen

Intercessions: prepared by Jan Armstrong
Loving God, we praise you and acknowledge you as Lord of our lives. We thank you for the rhythm of the changing seasons reflecting your care and provision for all your creation. Help us to be faithful and loving stewards of our world.
For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.
Loving God, thank you that you always keep your promises. You have promised that all who trust in you will share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. We pray that we may stand firm in our faith as we show your love and understanding to one another. Strengthen those who guide us in this time. We pray for Archbishop Jeremy, Bishop John and Reverend Helen. Centre our hearts on your teachings to lead us forward in your will. May the Holy Spirit be alive in our hearts and minds each day.
For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.
Loving God, you know the heart and needs of each person. We pray for all those in areas of conflict in the world. Hear their cries for help we beg and guide the peacemakers to reach a peaceful solution. Guide and equip each of us to show your love and concern for each one in our local community. Help us to be still and hear your voice guiding us. We thank you Father God that in caring for those in need we may be a witness for your love. We thank you for all those who work with children and their families each week in our parish and community activities.
For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.
Loving God, as you weep with those who weep and are in need we pray especially for all who are physically sick or suffering. Give physical and spiritual strength to those who care for them. Use each of us, we pray, to ease the burdens of those around us. Centre our thoughts on you, dear God and fill us with your peace which passes all understanding.
For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.
Loving God, we thank you for the lives which have been lived to your honour and glory, for those who have witnessed of your infinite love and now are with you for eternity. We pray for your comfort to be with the families of those whose yearly remembrance occurs at this time. We thank you for the sure and certain knowledge that in your time we will join with those who have gone before us to praise and worship you forever.
For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.
You are our God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Grant that what we have asked for in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

A note from Helen
Our passage from Job this week may leave us feeling slightly ‘unsettled’. In this ‘closing’ of the book of Job, we find its ending not quite ‘kosher’. Job has endured much, he has questioned God and God has questioned him and now he falls down before God and confesses his impiety, he confesses he had not realised the scope of God’s power when he questioned God’s justice and morality. And in return for his humble apology, Job receives twice as much as he had before, including children. But this is where it gets a little awkward. What does that say about the children Job has lost. Were they of no consequence. How do you ‘replace’ children you have lost through death. Most scholars believe this ending was added to undo some of the criticism of the tradition of acts-consequences and rewards-punishments, enshrined in Hebraic theology. But the ending is not a good one. Even though tragedy leads us into growth and healing, we are always ‘scarred’ by our losses and pain. After all the pain Job endured, did he recover from his ‘God-induced’ trauma. Did he ever fully make peace with God and experience God in terms of love instead of fear and awe? Did he accept his daughters and sons as fully his own?

So this ending leaves us questioning, how do we understand God’s relationship to humankind and the world? Is our understanding primarily in terms of love or power. Job’s God is undeniably awesome in power and ingenuity, but is there real love displayed in God’s intentional testing of Job; in the permitting of all his children to be killed; and God’s acquiescence to Job’s physical torture?

A Ministry Sunday Question to Ponder:
How are you Accepting and Welcoming in Loving Service?
