We are a Christian faith community living in the way of Christ accepting and welcoming all in loving service, growing Christ’s future on Earth.

Sentence for the Day
Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength, and you shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Mark 10.29–31

Collect
O God, whom to follow is to risk our whole lives: as Ruth and Naomi loved and held to one another, abandoning the ways of the past, so may we also not be divided, but travel together into that strange land where you will lead us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ministry Collect
Almighty God, we thank you for all the gifts you have given us: our lives, our loved ones, all that we have and all that we are. Most of all, we thank you for Jesus, your Son and our Redeemer, who came among us to show us the way to eternal life. Jesus was the perfect steward of your gifts, showing that complete trust in you is necessary, and that giving of self is a most important part of following him. May the offerings of our time, and our talents, be made in the same spirit of sacrifice that Jesus taught us by his life and death for us. Amen.

Readings: Ruth 1:1-18; Psalm 146; Hebrews 9:11-15; Mark 12:13-17, 28-34

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

Intercessions: prepared by Peta Tierney

Lord God, you hear us calling in the night; hear our prayers.

We give thanks to you, Lord of sea and sky, for our wonderful world and all its gifts which sustain us. We pray to you, who made the stars at night, for the future of our earth and for all those suffering from natural disasters across the world.

We pray for those suffering in conflicts around the world. We pray you will touch the hearts of those who wage war and impose suffering on so many.

Lord, you hear us calling in the night; hear our prayer.

We give thanks to you, Lord of wind and flame, for your church and for all who follow you. We pray for your servants Jeremy, John and Helen, and we pray for all Christians especially those whose faith is tested.

Lord God, you hear us calling in the night; hold your people in your heart.

We give thanks to you, Lord of snow and rain. You have borne your people’s pain; you have heard your people cry. Comfort those that call on your love and forgiveness; make their darkness bright. We pray for those who are sick, or dying, and for those struggling with life challenges. We pray especially for…

Lord God, you hear us calling in the night; hold your people in your heart.

We give you thanks for all that bear your light in darkness and have lived their lives for you, for Martin Luther and all your saints you send in every age. We give thanks for the faithful departed and for those whose year’s mind occurs at this time.

Lord God, you hear us calling in the night; hold your people in your heart.

Lord God, you hear us calling in the night.  Your hand will save. Hold your people in your heart, and grant that, what we have asked in faith, we might by your grace receive. Amen.

A note from Helen
Context for our reading from Ruth is important.  Naomi and her husband left Bethlehem in the midst of drought and famine to settle in Moab where there was food for their family.  Her husband and both her sons are now dead, and she has heard there is again food in Bethlehem so she ‘heads home’, but as her daughters-in-law are Moabite women, Naomi encourages them to return to their families where they have a chance of new marriages.  Ruth refuses and returns with Naomi to a strange land where she is an ‘outsider’.  This reading prompts us to question our response to ‘outsiders’, not just migrants but all those from outside our ‘sphere of reference’, be it religious, ethnic or geographical.  Our hospitality affirms the divine image within the immigrant and God’s own vision for each person.  We are all pilgrims, the boundaries of our nation, of our ‘spheres of reference’ are relative.  The earth belongs to God.

A Ministry Sunday Question to Ponder:

What does accepting and welcoming people in loving service look like?

NOTICES:

Ministry Sunday

Ministry Sunday is the second part of the parish Stewardship program each year. Today you will receive an envelope including a list of ministries you may wish to participate in during 2025 and descriptions of these ministries. If you are interested in a ministry area but would like to know more about it before ticking a box please ask one of the Stewardship team, or those who are fulfilling these ministries at present. Some areas will involve a roster, others are for individual events or activities throughout the year, while others are flexible timewise. We look forward to your responses on Ministry Sunday, 17th November.
