Sentence for the Day

By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Luke 1:78–79

Collect

God of our salvation,

you straighten the winding ways of our hearts

and smooth the paths made rough by sin:

keep our hearts watchful in holiness,

and bring to perfection the good you have begun in us.

We ask this through him whose coming is certain,

whose Day draws near, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Readings: Malachi 3:1-14; Song of Zechariah; Philippians .1-11; Luke 3:1-6

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

Intercessions:  prepared by Keith Slater

In this season of Advent we wait! We know you have already come, O Lord! And yet we wait further for your coming in all fullness, into our hearts and minds.

We pray for the kingdom of love to overcome all places of hatred, enmity and war, remembering especially the people of the Ukraine, of Russia, of Gaza and of Israel.

Open the hearts and minds of all people to hear your disturbing words of justice and peace.

Faithful God, in your mercy: hear our prayer

We pray for this land, for the many different peoples who share Australia. Give us sensitivity in what we say and do as we interact daily with those around us - politically, commercially and socially.

Faithful God, in your mercy: hear our prayer

We pray for the Church that we might be signs of the Advent of Christ our Lord and Redeemer. Give us courage to be signs of the Kingdom of love and reconciliation.

Faithful God, in your mercy: hear our prayer

We pray for those who are sick or suffering, and we hold in our prayers all that serve them with the ministry of hope and healing. We pray especially for ……

Faithful God, in your mercy: hear our prayer

We give thanks for those who have loved us and guided us throughout our lives, and we give thanks for those who have gone before us, remembering especially …….

Faithful God, in your mercy: hear our prayer

Gracious loving God: hear our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A note from Helen

Our Philippians reading speaks of a harvest of righteousness, Paul imagines the growth of the Philippian community in similar terms as the growth of a plant.  Malachi, on the other hand, speaks of a spiritual harvest that requires a refining fire.  Get rid of the ‘dross’, throw out all non-essential things in your life.  Malachi reminds us that Advent is a time of refining and simplifying.  Faithfulness that focuses on the deeper meaning of Christmas, God’s incarnation in our lives and the coming of Christ among oppressed peoples.  Refining involves a new heart and a generous spirit.  Our generosity needs extend beyond our close circles and encompass the larger human family and all creation.
