Sentence for the Day
Do not fear. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love. Zephaniah 3.16–17
Collect
Almighty God,
you sent your Son into a world
where the wheat must be winnowed from the chaff
and evil clings even to what is good:
let the fire of your Spirit purge us of all corruption,
so that, purified, we may wait eagerly for him
whose coming is certain, whose Day draws near,
your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Joy is your gift to us, your people, our Heavenly Father. We feel the joy of your presence even in the midst of pain and brokenness that we see around us. But we see your presence in kindness and justice and fairness and beauty. Open our eyes to signs of your presence, even in times of difficulty or struggle.
God is near; shout aloud and sing for joy.
Jesus is your gift to us. Transform us to live in gratitude and trust and to live lives of compassion for others as he taught us. We give thanks for those who give of their time, talents and means to support others in need. We pray for all those struggling at this time, and especially for…(named aloud or in the silence of our hearts.)
God is near; shout aloud and sing for joy.
Your church is your gift to us. We give you thanks for the worldwide Anglican Communion and for Christians throughout the world celebrating your coming amongst us at Christmas. We give you thanks for your saints and their contributions in every age and for those whose year’s mind occurs at this time.
God is near; shout aloud and sing for joy. For with us comes to dwell, in our very midst, the great and Holy One of Israel.
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.
Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A note from Helen
This week we celebrate joy, the third of our Advent candles is the pink one, and it is the candle of joy. Yet our joy is not that which comes with ‘instant gratification’, in the Advent period, we wait, joyfully, for the ongoing encounter with an intimate God who has plans for us – for good, for a future and a hope. But when we look at the world around us we may wonder, how can I be joyful. Yet, the authors of today’s scriptures were in a similar ‘boat’, they dealt with the interplay of life and death, the collapse of the familiar social order, the dishonesty and incompetence of political leaders, and the impact of the machinations of hostile nations. And, beyond the chaos, they saw the birth of a new order. Zephaniah celebrates the dawn of a new day, a day of restoration in which God is even singing. Isaiah promises that ‘with joy you will draw from the waters of salvation’. Healing waters abound and they are right where we are. Paul counsels the community to ‘Rejoice in God always’. God is not done with us or our histories. God has a vision of the future that we can join as God’s companions in the pathway to Shalom. Today, we celebrate God’s vision of wholeness in a fragmented world. This is the gift of a larger perspective in which joy comes from identifying with God’s cause in the ambiguity of history. God’s cause will not be defeated and while we wait for our own and our world’s transformation, we can joyfully choose to act our way into a new way of seeing, living, and loving.
