We are a Christian faith community living in the way of Christ accepting and welcoming all in loving service, growing Christ’s future on Earth.

Sentence for the Day

The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’ Luke 3:22

Collect

Spirit of energy and change,

in whose power Jesus was anointed

to be the hope of the nations:

be poured out also upon us

without reserve or distinction,

that we may have confidence

and strength to implant your justice on the earth;

through Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Readings: Isaiah 43:1-7; Psalm 29; Acts 8:14-17; Luke 3:15-22

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

Intercessions:  prepared by Keith Slater

In the waters of the River Jordan, your Son Jesus Christ was baptised with those he came to save: bring your people today to seek the salvation that you offer so we may turn away from all that holds us in the power of evil.

God in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Through the waters of baptism you seal us as your own and make us one with all who bear your name: empower us with your spirit to faithfully serve you and proclaim your good news of justice, peace, redemption and love.

God in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Being born anew we pray for this world, for peace and harmony in the face of war and conflict. We pray for those parts of the world where disharmony and hatred prevail……..   We hold in our prayer - the Church: our leaders and all members, as we seek to model ‘giving love’. We pray for a softening of hearts in the world and a transformation and desire to seek a new way of being.

God in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We hold in our prayer those who are in need at this time; those who are sick or suffering; the homeless and displaced; those suffering injustice….. We pray for those who ask for our prayer ……………. Surround them with your grace and empowering love.

God in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We give thanks for those who have gone before us, especially those who have been active examples and witnesses of faith, and who have helped to shape and pattern our lives.

God in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Gracious God accept our prayers, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pew Reflection

The words of our reading from Isaiah speak of the omnipresent care of a personal god, a god who has formed our lives from the beginning.  These words suggest that God is here in our grief and our pain, but they can also be seen as implying that that blessings only fall on ‘everyone who is called by my name’.  And the meaning of ‘everyone’ has sometimes been used to exclude some because of their beliefs, religious traditions, life circumstances or sexual identity, others exclude themselves because they feel they are outside of God’s care.  Our readings today ask us to reflect on does ‘everyone’ only refer to particular people or to all humankind.  If God is with us in the waters and fires, what is the nature of God’s presence in such critical moments.  In what ways was Jesus chosen as unique and different from ourselves.
