Sentence for the Day
Blessed are you when people hate you on account of the Son of man. Rejoice and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. Luke 6:23
Collect
Righteous God,
you challenge the powers that rule this world
and you show favour to the oppressed:
instil in us a true sense of justice,
that we may discern the signs of your kingdom
and strive for right to prevail;
for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Readings: Jeremiah 17:5-10; Psalm 1; 1 Corinthians 15:12-20; Luke 6:17-26
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today
Intercessions: prepared by Peta Tierney
Creator God, you have made the marvellous earth and all the wonders of the universe. Help us to respect your gifts of life, and ecosystems and landscapes. Help us to be good stewards of your gifts of water and arable land. Soften the hearts of those who would exploit your gifts for their own greed and arrogance, and those who brutalise human and animal life. We pray for those caught up in wars and conflicts, and in natural disasters. We give thanks for those who bring help and relief from suffering.
Mercifully accept our prayers; because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you.
Father God, you sent your only son to live and work amongst us, to experience all what we do, both joy and sorrow, riches and hardship, friendship and violence. You know the pain and fear some feel. We pray for all who need your love and guidance. We pray especially for … and for any others known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts…
Mercifully accept our prayers; because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you.
Eternal God, you sent your son Jesus to teach your people your new commandment,’ to love one another as I love you’. Bless those who gather in Jesus’ name and try to live lives according to his will. Bless Archbishop Jeremy, Bishop John and Reverend Helen and all in our parish as we care for your church through our various tasks and for one another.
Mercifully accept our prayers; because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you.
Comforter God, you know the pain of suffering and death. Hear us when we cry out in pain and question death. You comfort those who grieve. We are comforted to know you have a place for each of us with you in heaven when our time on earth is done. We remember with love the faithful departed and those whose year’s mind occurs at this time.
Mercifully accept our prayers; because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you.

Pew Reflection
Both the Jeremiah reading and our Psalm provide us with wisdom literature in the form of poetry. Jeremiah compares the blessed man and the cursed man to desert conditions. The blessed man, those who trust in God, lives like a well-watered, deeply rooted tree by the river while the cursed man, those who depend on human powers, lives like a dried-up shrub languishing in a salt flat. And the Psalm continues these comparisons. It tells us those who choose the path of life are ‘trees planted by streams of water’, and the wicked are ‘chaff that the wind blows away’. The choice is ours to make, which do you choose?
