Sentence for the Day
Love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. You will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Luke 6:35
Collect
God of compassion,
keep before us the love you have revealed in your Son,
who prayed even for his enemies.
In our words and deeds help us to be like him,
through whom we pray,
Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
Amen.
Readings: Genesis 45:3-11,15; Psalm 37:1-11,40-41; 1 Corinthians 15:35-50; Luke 6:27-38
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today
Intercessions: prepared by Peta Tierney
Heavenly Father, we praise you and give you thanks for the marvellous works of your hands, the Earth, and the creatures and plants who live alongside us. Help us to be good stewards of your gifts to us. We pray for those caught up in conflicts and war, and for victims of violence everywhere. Touch the hearts of those who are driven by power, brutality and greed, who are blind to the suffering of others. Lord, in your mercy, continue your loving-kindness to those who know you,
and your favour to those who are true of heart.
Heavenly Father, your faithful servants rejoice that you came to live amongst us and to establish your church. Bless the worldwide Anglican Communion especially at this time of change, and those in our diocese who do your work. Bless Archbishop Jeremy, Bishop John and Reverend Helen and all in our parish who contribute their time and talents to grow your church. Guide us in growing our faith and in inviting others to share in your grace. Lord, in your mercy, continue your loving-kindness to those who know you,
and your favour to those who are true of heart.
Heavenly Father, you lived in a family and a community. Bless our families and communities. We pray for those in need, for those who are rudderless who need your love and to feel you guiding them. We pray for those who are ill or in pain. We pray for those who are dying. We pray especially for….and for any others known to us, whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts. Lord, in your mercy, continue your loving-kindness to those who know you,
and your favour to those who are true of heart.
Heavenly Father, you lived and died amongst us. You know the struggles of living and of dying. Comfort those who are dying, and those who mourn. We remember with joy those who lived their lives for you, and especially those whose year’s mind occurs at this time. We give thanks for the life of your servant Matthias. Lord, in your mercy, continue your loving-kindness to those who know you,
and your favour to those who are true of heart.

Pew Reflection
Our vision of reality, our theological perspective – our vision of God’s presence in the world and our lives – shapes our hopes and inspires our behaviour. Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, in our Genesis reading, and they are dumbfounded both at discovering his identity and by his willingness to forgive them. They expect Joseph to exact ‘eye for an eye’ vengeance on them or some other ‘justified’ reprisal. Joseph, on the other hand, has a strong sense of ‘divine providence’, seeing his brothers ill-intentioned actions being used by God to reveal good purposes. This reading asks us to reflect – how do we transform the pain and alienation we feel, the traumas we have experienced, to life-supporting and reconciling action. How do we imagine good coming from dysfunction, racism, incivility in politics and society. The process is not easy and cannot be achieved by denying the past or present. Yet, Joseph found possibility within pain, trusting that God was at work in the ‘moral arc’ of his life and his family’s history.
