We are a Christian faith community living in the way of Christ accepting and welcoming all in loving service, growing Christ’s future on Earth.

Sentence for the Day

While he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him.

Luke 15.21

Collect

God of compassion,

you are slow to anger,

and full of mercy,

welcoming sinners who return to you with penitent hearts:

receive in your loving embrace all who come home to you,

and seat them at your bountiful table, that, with all your children,

they may feast with delight on all that satisfies the hungry heart.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Hope 25 prayer

God of Hope

you call on us to be your witnesses in this uncertain world:

by your Sprit awaken in us

a true vision of your kingdom

a greater certainty of our salvation, and a deeper dedication

to your service:

that through our words and actions the same Spirit may

bring many who are lost to be found and for them to celebrate the hope that we can only have

in Jesus Christ,

in whose name we pray.

Amen.

Pew Reflection

Our Scriptures today reflect God’s unconditional love for us and the challenges of accepting the ‘unworthy’.  Most of us would admit that we have not always done as we should have, we have all ‘sinned’, and this is true of our family dynamics as well as individuals.  The gap between the moral and immoral in our communities as well as our families is often not as big as we think.  We all stand in the need for grace.

God’s aim for us is wholeness, even it is conditioned by our behaviour.  We have all been that ‘lost child’ who has turned their backs on everything to ‘do their own thing’, until the ‘still small voice’, the ‘whisper of sighs too deep for words’ leads us back.  Grace is greater than sin, love never ends and it welcomes every lost child home.  But even those who are the ‘good child’ are often lost.  Goodness brings its own burden, family honour, you always have to ‘deliver’, can’t make mistakes.  Grace and celebration is there for that one too, but they are too busy being good to notice it.  Paul’s words add to this story of lost boys.  Don’t regard anyone from a human perspective.  Look beneath the surface, see divinity in every face, glimpse the Christ within.

Intercessions:  taken from David Adam, “Glimpses of Glory”

Lord of all compassion, we return to you like children who had wandered away: we trust in your love, we rejoice in your mercy, we know you will accept us.  Lord, enfold us in your peace, and forgive us our sins.

Holy God, when we wander from the way, call us back; when we stray from the truth, redirect us; when we do not live life to the full inspire and refresh us.  May we and your whole church follow him who is the way, the truth and the life.  We pray for all who have wandered away from the faith, for all who have lost touch with you and your love. We remember all who are pilgrims and seekers.

Lord, we turn to you. Enfold us in your peace.

Lord God, we pray for all who have been separated from loved one, through war or circumstances, for those who have left home and become lost.  We remember those who live on the streets of our cities.  We pray for all who live in poverty and debt.

Lord, we turn to you. Enfold us in your peace.

We give thanks for our families, our parents and all who love us. We pray especially for those who are dear to us but with whom we have lost contact. We ask you blessing upon all who are taken into care, for all separated from loved ones through illness.

Lord, we turn to you. Enfold us in your peace.

Lord, we pray for places where your glory is marred or scarred: for all who live in slum dwellings, for all who do not have enough to eat or someone to care for them.  We remember all lonely and distressed people.  We ask your blessing upon all who are ill at home or in hospital, and we pray especially for …….

Lord … Lord, we turn to you. Enfold us in your peace.

We pray for all whom you have called home into your kingdom where sorrow and pain are no more. We remember especially those whose anniversaries occur at this time.

Lord, we turn to you. Enfold us in your peace.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
