Sentence for the Day

‘Is not my word like fire,’ says the Lord, ‘and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?’ Jeremiah 23:29

Collect

Everliving God,

increase in us your gift of faith,

that, forsaking sin and all that hinders us,

we may run with perseverance the race that is set before us,

looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen

Readings: Isaiah 5:1-7; Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19;

       Hebrews 11:29-12:2; Luke 12:49-59

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

Intercessions:  prepared by Di Ayscough

We gather here today in your name to thank you and praise you for all you offer us through your Holy Church. We are blessed with so much to be thankful for and so much to celebrate. Thank you, for our beautiful world, filled with natures flowers, trees, birds, and wildlife. Thank you for our families and our friends – all of whom we can share our love with and reflect our Christian faith through what we do.

Heavenly Father, we pray for our lives to reflect your purpose for us.

Help the Church Body to walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have given them. Help us in all our interactions with one another to have humble and gentle hearts. Grant us patience for one another, sharing with one another in love. May Archbishop Jeremy, continue to walk humbly with you and with your help, show his strength and leadership as he continues his calling to lead the Church, and us, to a place where we treat all with dignity and care.  We pray for Bishop John, Reverend Helen and all who work to honour you.

Heavenly Father, we pray for our lives to reflect your purpose for us.

We pray for our own nation. It has a great diversity of landscape and a great diversity of people and yet, we all have a common purpose, to respect each other and honour our differences. We ask that St George’s and St Luke’s continue to support our local community and the many people in need. If each one of us shows someone we care, we will be honouring you.

Heavenly Father, we pray for our lives to reflect your purpose for us.

As we go forth into the world this day, let our every word be a prayer, and our every act be testimony to your love and truth. We hold before you those who are homeless and hungry, especially as we live comfortably in our homes. Draw near and comfort them in spirit and bless those who work to provide these people with shelter, food and friendship. Accept the prayers of your people and look with compassion upon all who turn to you for help.

Heavenly Father, we pray for our lives to reflect your purpose for us.

How can death give way to life?  Your word says that Jesus, took on human flesh and suffered the worst kind of death. This message is difficult to understand. We know and understand your foolishness is wiser than our wisdom. Your weakness is greater than our strength. Help us to know it is only through Jesus Christ that we can be saved. We pray for the dearly departed, remembering especially Paul and those whose years mind occur at this time.

Heavenly Father, we pray for our lives to reflect your purpose for us.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pew Reflection

There is little comfort in the readings for today, division, persecution, destruction, and punishment are the watchwords.  Jesus comes to challenge and agitate not comfort.  God’s message divides as unites.  Isaiah speaks of the land being overrun by enemies due to injustice which leads to God withdrawing God’s protective care.  Jesus speaks of division among those who disagree over his authority and the nature of his message.  What do these passages say to a world consumed by incivility and inhospitality toward strangers and those who disagree with us.  There is no way to soften the words in these scriptures.  But we also cannot use them to condemn those who think differently to us.  Humility and repentance are appropriate responses from ‘children of light’ and ‘children of darkness’

Little Lukies is a church-based program, run every Monday in term time, that introduces primary school aged children to God and the church. Children are given afternoon tea when they arrive from school, followed by a game, a ‘lesson’ in the church and an activity related to the story that is taught each week.  SLAngers is for high school children who meet fortnightly and are met with afternoon tea and then engage in ‘community focused’ activities and bible-based discussions
