Collect

God of the ages,

you call the Church to keep watch in the world and to discern the signs of the times:

grant us the wisdom that your Spirit bestows, so that with courage we may proclaim your prophetic word,

and complete the work you have set before us;

through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Season of Creation Collect

Lord you call us to be peacemakers; to be people abiding in peaceful habitation.

May our fruitful fields be seen as forests, and your spirit pour upon us so that the righteous may be at peace and the wilderness become a fruitful field.

May your Spirit be poured upon us so we can work together for peace with Creation.

Amen

Readings: Jeremiah 18:1-11, Psalm 139:1-5, 12-18, Philemon 1-25;

       Luke 14:25-35

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

Intercessions:  prepared by John Noble

This is the day that the Lord has made....Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Let us first thank God for the beautiful world in which we live, the heavens above and the earth and oceans around us. May we always remember that we are but guardians, and that we must preserve all the benefits we have so that they are passed on to those who follow us.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

We thank God for the peace and prosperity in which we live and pray for all who are suffering in the military conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and other areas. We pray for all those who are working to find peaceful solutions to these conflicts, and   for all those who have lost their loved ones, their homes and possessions and have been forced to find refuge in other countries. In particular we pray for so many refugees who have arrived in Australia, but who have not been awarded permanent residency status in spite of living here for many years.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

We pray for all those who have recently been affected by natural disasters, earthquakes, floods, landslides, forest fires and other events, particularly those in developing countries where help is very limited or not available.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

We pray for the leaders of Anglican churches throughout  the world as they seek to spread the Gospel in difficult and perhaps hostile surroundings. We pray for Archbishop Jeremy, Bishop John and our priest Helen and for all those volunteers in our community who seek to bring help and comfort to those most in need in their own homes.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

We thank God for our health and strength, and pray for all those working in hospitals, clinics and other medical centres who treat and care for those suffering long or short-term illness, disability or accidents. We remember all those in residential care or in their own homes who care for the elderly, disabled and any others who cannot be treated elsewhere. Particularly we pray for.....and any others we remember in our own hearts.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

We pray for our local community, those who work in the emergency services, schools, and everyone we rely upon to provide us with what we need in shops,  offices and public transport systems.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

We give thanks for the lives of those whom we have known but are no longer with us, and particularly we remember those whose years mind occurs at this time. Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive.

Pew Reflection:

Our reading from Jeremiah raises all those ‘God is punishing us’  thoughts and voices whenever we suffer from a ‘weather event’  or other personal or global disaster.  But I do not see the God I worship as that vindictive.  I do not think that ‘natural disasters’  are the result of God punishing us for living a wayward life.  The God I know and worship is a forgiving God.  Yes, we have to repent, yes, we have to try to live a good life, but I do not think that ‘natural disaster’ or ‘sickness’ or any other disaster is ‘sent’ by God to punish us.  Natural disasters are just that ‘natural’, and although the increase in frequency of them is because of global warming which is ‘our fault’ God is not ‘allowing’  these to occur to punish us, the climate is simply responding the only way it knows, and we have to ‘suffer’ it because we have created it.  Jeremiah’s vision contains both good and bad news, theologically.  The vision of the divine potter focuses on issues of justice and national well-being, and there are consequences for how we behave, either by God’s hand or the impact of unjust actions.  This passage recognises that what we do matters to God and God’s ultimate goal is creation and healing, not destruction and devastation.

Ask Around: Are there things or ideas that unite all humans?

What are they?

NOTICES:

Coffee in Canungra

This Tuesday, September 9 at 11am, we are meeting at Café Metz for Coffee in Canungra. All Welcome! 😊

Parish Name Badges

Are you wanting a parish name badge? We are about to put in an order and as there is a ‘delivery charge’, it would be best if we ordered them all at the same time. Badges are $20 each. They are white plastic and are attached with either a pin or magnet. Please place your preference on the sheet at the entrance.

ART EXHIBIT AND CAFÉ: To make the cafe run as smoothly as possible we still need a few more folks to sign up for serving.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to bake. We now have enough cakes to feed the expected multitude. 😊

If you have any cut flowers or potted plants, would you please bring them to the church on the 25th (Thursday) so that we can decorate the church.

Council plant vouchers: Thank- you!!

We have collected 22 plants from council and have had more dropped off by parishioners, so this has been a huge success and will greatly assist our fund-raising efforts. Thank you to everyone.
