Collect of the Day
God, our Creator,
whose glory fills our planet,
help us to discern your vibrant presence among us
and our kin in creation, especially in the rocks,
the deserts and the wild world of the Outback.
Help us empathise with your creatures who are suffering.
Lift our spirits to rejoice with the wild world of the Outback.
In the name of Christ,
who reconciles and renews all things in creation. Amen.
Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – Green
Readings:
Joel 1:8-10,17-20; Psalm 18:6-19; Romans 8:18-27; Matthew 3:13-4:1
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.
A note from Helen
We often look at the results of disaster from a human perspective only. Assuming that we are the only ones affected, traumatised, or injured by disaster. But, as we have seen after flood and bushfire, animals are affected, and so is the whole of creation. Joel reminds us that at such times the ground mourns and the creatures of the wild cry out to God. The author of the letter to the Romans makes it clear to us that human beings are not the only ones waiting for liberation, creation is also longing for that day, as a mother about to give birth. And after his baptism, when Jesus is driven into the wilderness, he spends 40days, not just discerning who he is and what is called to do, but also connecting with creation.

Intercessions – adapted from Season of Creation resources
Creative Lord, source of the evolution of life,
we are bold to claim our thankfulness for every new day.
For every possibility of making a new start.
For courage to make that new start.
For hope that we will be better for it.
Lord we groan with the earth when we say we feel the salt rising through our flesh and burning our skin; we are sad when the voice of the tree frog disappears; our souls burn when nuclear waste is dumped within us; our spirit weeps when the ozone layer cannot protect our families; and we groan because too many governments and people are not working toward protecting us and the earth on which we live.
Lord, give us the courage to say it needs to change,
Lord help us to be agents of change
Lord we live in hope that soon strategies will be implemented to help heal the environment; we groan like a mother with birth pangs as we wait for the healing of damage and for new life to begin; we groan in anticipation of a restored creation where all creatures will have a home and all will live in safety; we groan with fellow citizens of this planet sensitive to the day when creation will again feel safe, protected and cared for.
Lord, give us the courage to say it needs to change,
Lord help us to be agents of change
Lord we know that healing is rising, free in Christ’s body; healing is flowing, free with Christ’s blood; we pray that this deep healing will pulse through our bodies and heal the world’s wounds still bleeding and red.
Lord, give us the courage to say it needs to change,
Lord help us to be agents of change
Healing Lord, we pray for those sick, especially ……, and those known to us whom we name now, or in the silence of our hearts.
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Loving Lord, we pray for those no longer with us, who are now in your loving arms, especially ….., may we all join them when our time comes, and we no longer need these earthly bodies.
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
(Prayer for Archbishop-Elect – Rev’d Helen)
Compassionate and merciful God,
hear our prayers, and grant that what we have asked for in faith, we may by your grace, receive.
September Retiring Collection: Little Lukies at St Luke’s, Canungra
Little Lukies is a church-based program run at St Luke’s for primary school aged children every Monday afternoon during the school term. It has been operating since 2019 (with only a few necessary breaks during covid). St Luke’s Guild and Jan Armstrong have resourced this important activity that introduces the children to God and the church. Numbers have risen to up to 20 children weekly. The children are given afternoon tea when they arrive from school. This is followed by a game, a ‘lesson’ in the church and an activity related to the story that is taught each week.
